The Iconic G-Wagon: Where Luxury Meets Legendary Off-Roading
Few vehicles manage to maintain their legacy while embracing the future quite like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, affectionately known as the G-Wagon. What started in 1979 as a rugged military utility vehicle has evolved into a global status symbol — all while keeping its unmistakable boxy silhouette. Whether it’s navigating city streets or tackling treacherous trails, the G-Class proves that luxury and toughness can coexist beautifully.
The latest lineup of the G-Wagon includes both traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) models and the much-anticipated all-electric EQG. The ICE versions, especially the AMG G 63, come powered by a thunderous 4.0-liter V8 engine equipped with a 48V mild-hybrid system. With up to 585 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, this SUV can launch from 0 to 100 km/h in just around 4.5 seconds — seriously impressive for something this massive and square.

But raw power is just one part of the story. The G-Class is loaded with technology and refinement. Inside, you’ll find plush leather seats with massage functions, a crisp infotainment system, ambient lighting, and an audio setup that feels like a private concert hall. On the road, it’s surprisingly comfortable. Off-road, it’s nothing short of a beast — offering features like three locking differentials, an advanced low-range gearbox, and even an off-road crawl mode.
Then comes the future-forward twist: the all-electric EQG. This isn’t just a cosmetic update; it’s a reimagined G-Wagon designed for tomorrow’s roads and trails. Powered by four individual electric motors — one for each wheel — the EQG delivers instant torque and unmatched control. It even features advanced off-road tech like a “tank turn” function that lets it pivot almost in place, and a transparent bonnet view that gives a virtual look beneath the front of the SUV when climbing or descending obstacles. The electric version offers a claimed range of over 430 km and delivers performance on par with its gas-powered sibling.
Customization is also a huge part of the G-Class experience. From paint colors and wheel designs to interior trims and upholstery, nearly every detail can be tailored. That’s part of the reason why each G-Wagon feels deeply personal to its owner.
As for pricing, in India, the ICE G-Class starts around ₹2.55 crore and climbs up to ₹4.30 crore for the AMG G 63 Collector’s Edition. The EQG, meanwhile, enters the market at approximately ₹3 crore, making it one of the most premium electric SUVs available.
When you stack it up against other luxury SUVs — like the Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini Urus, or Land Rover Defender — the G-Wagon stands out. It doesn’t try to blend in. It refuses to be just another high-end SUV. It’s bold, boxy, unapologetically iconic — and now, future-ready too.
